All Out on May 20 to Oppose NATO in Chicago!

by George Saunders and Ann Montague

After President Obama proudly announced he had invited NATO and the G8 to meet in Chicago, city authorities, headed by Obama’s former chief of staff and now mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, immediately began a campaign to intimidate and vilify protesters. Protest organizers knew it would be a civil liberties fight, but they confidently stated: “We will march in May during the NATO meeting to deliver our message: Jobs, Housing, Healthcare, Education, Our Pensions, Environment: Not War! We and tens of thousands will be in the streets that day for a family-friendly rally and march, with cries so loud they will be heard in Camp David and across the globe. We are fighting for our future and to speak out against the wars and their cutbacks which are designed to benefit the 1% at the expense of the 99% of the world.”

On April 4, bowing to public pressure, the city of Chicago granted the permit for the May 20 anti-NATO protest. The Coalition Against NATO/G8 War And Poverty Agenda also demanded the city waive the nearly $40,000.00 in fees to use a public park and give a more favorable march route as well. The permit is for a rally at noon on Sunday, May 20, at the Petrillo Bandshell in Grant Park without the onerous fees and with the changes to the march route that the protesters insisted on. The march will start promptly at 2:00 PM after the rally. Over 120 organizations and individuals have endorsed the rally and march including local and national antiwar coalitions, unions, environmental justice, civil rights, veterans and faith-based organizations.
